Smithfield and Hannaford Donate 40,000 Pounds of Protein to Food Bank as Part of “Helping Hungry Homes” Tour

Biddeford, ME — Smithfield donated a combined 40,000 pounds of protein to Good Shepherd Food Bank as part of the company’s Helping Hungry Homes program today. Hannaford, a Smithfield retailer and supporter of Good Shepherd Food Bank, also participated in the donation.

This significant donation in Maine is part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes tour, the company’s coast-to-coast effort to help families and individuals become more food secure. Through this program, Smithfield has made more than 170 donations to food banks, after-school nutrition programs, and natural-disaster relief across the country.

Food banks nationwide are reporting a significant increase in the number of people coming to them for help. The recent recession and the continuing high level of unemployment are having a profound effect on food banks’ ability to meet the demand. As a result, food assistance organizations across the country have been reporting that more individuals and families are turning to them for assistance including more first-time visitors, unemployed workers, employed individuals, seniors and families with children.
