Maine Gold & Silver Gives More Than $12,000 to Help Fight Hunger in Maine

Maine Gold & Silver, a local coin and jewelry store, has raised $12,325 for Good Shepherd Food Bank and its network of hunger relief partners through the company’s Feed the Hungry Fund. The money raised by Maine Gold & Silver will allow the Food Bank to provide 49,000 meals to Mainers facing hunger.

Maine Gold & Silver takes donations of metals that cannot otherwise be sold for cash. Once enough metals are collected, the staff packs them up and sends them to a refinery where minute amounts of precious metals are extracted in exchange for cash. The concept was conceived after staff members saw countless pounds of costume jewelry and gold and silver plated items heading for the landfill.

The refinery is also contributing to the fund by paying for all shipping costs and waiving all processing fees.

“It has been due to the great generosity of our customers that we have been able to make this program such a success.  We are very pleased to give back to our community in such a meaningful way,” says John Colby, Vice President of Maine Gold and Silver.
