Celebrating the Legacy of MLK Jr. – 2025 Maine Events and Opportunities

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 20, 2025, we come together as a community to honor his legacy and continue the work for a more just world.

This annual observance honors the life and legacy of the renowned civil rights leader, serving as a powerful reminder of the continued journey toward equality and justice. In Maine, there are countless opportunities to come together in unity, deepen our understanding, and renew our commitment to Dr. King’s enduring vision for a more just and inclusive world.

Participate in Community Events:

Maine’s communities unite to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day through various events and activities. Attend local workshops and lectures exploring Dr. King’s life and teachings. Engaging in communal gatherings provides an opportunity to connect with others committed to social justice.

Lewiston: Each year, Bates students, faculty, staff, local community members, and campus visitors gather to examine contemporary human issues through the lens of King’s work and ideas, which are broadly defined. Bangor/Orono: Greater Bangor Area NAACP Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration – Join The Greater Bangor Area Branch NAACP and the University of Maine’s Raymond H. Fogler Library for this annual celebration of Dr. King and Civil Rights. Monday, January 20, 2025 (snow date: Saturday, January 25), 8:30 am –11:00 am (doors open at 8:00) at the Wells Conference Center, University of Maine, Orono. This year’s event will feature Somali-American author and public speaker, Abdi Nor Iftin. This presentation will focus on Iftin’s journey of survival, resilience, and immigration, highlighting his experiences as a Somali refugee, his memoir Call Me American, and his advocacy for newly arrived immigrants. Register here.

Educate and Reflect:
Take a moment to delve into Dr. King’s speeches, writings, and the historical context of the civil rights movement. Libraries, museums, and educational institutions often host exhibits or film screenings about this pivotal era in American history. Reflecting on the progress made and the challenges that persist can inspire personal growth and a renewed dedication to the principles of equality.

The BTS Center and the Maine Council of Churches in Portland will co-host a public, in-person, mid-day performance of Antonio Rocha’s solo show, “The Malaga Ship: A Story of Maine and the Middle Passage.” Monday, January 20, 2025, 12:00 pm – 12:45 pm. “The Malaga Ship” is a captivating performance in which artist Antonio Rocha uses his full body and voice to sing, narrate, and mime his way through this poetically rich historical story. Register here.

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine – CMTM is open to ALL GUESTS on Monday, January 20 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) from 9 am to 4 pm. Join CMTM in celebrating and honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Enjoy a weekend filled with celebrating Black artists and stories through collaborative poem creation and art exploration. CMTM is also pleased to welcome special guest Jordan Parks to MakerSpace from 10 am to 11 am. In celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King, Jordan will be hosting a printmaking workshop.
