Hannaford Supermarkets Delivers $40,500 in Food and Cash Donations to Good Shepherd Food Bank

Donation will be presented at the Food Bank’s Auburn warehouse on March 5

Auburn, ME – Hannaford Supermarkets is once again making a difference in the fight against hunger in Maine with a large donation of food and money on March 5. The donation comes as a result of the Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger campaign, which took place during the holiday season.

The March 5 delivery includes more than 7,000 boxes of pasta, 7,800 bottles of pasta sauce, and 12,000 cans of vegetables. In total, the Food Bank will be able to provide 112,000 nutritious meals to Maine families who face hunger thanks to Hannaford’s donation.

“Hannaford is a true partner in our work to end hunger in Maine,” said Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “One of the many reasons the Food Bank is able to distribute more than 10 million meals a year to Maine families in need is due to the dedication of Hannaford, its employees, and its customers.”

During the holiday season, the Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger program invited customers to donate money at the register, buy boxes of food staples for local pantries, and purchase specific products that triggered donations by Hannaford to state and regional food banks. The campaign took place in all 181 Hannaford stores between Oct. 14 and Dec. 31.

The Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger donation extends throughout the company’s footprint. Hannaford is contributing $994,674 in product and cash donations to food banks and food pantries in five states, including $242,576 in Maine.

“Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger is a true partnership between anti-hunger agencies, local people and our company focused on helping our neighbors in need,” said Eric Blom, spokesman for Hannaford Supermarkets. “We are happy to be able to make an impact on the fight against hunger in Maine by partnering with Good Shepherd Food Bank.”

Approximately 200,000 Mainers struggle with hunger, including nearly 1 in 4 Maine children, according to the USDA and Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief charity. Hannaford Supermarkets has supported hunger relief efforts in Maine for many years and has partnered with Good Shepherd Food Bank since 1983. The retailer donated more than 2.8 million pounds of food to the Food Bank in 2012.
