Lewiston/Auburn, ME
One in six Americans is struggling with hunger today. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 49 million Americans live in food insecure households, and many of those affected by hunger are children.
The Food-Bank received more than 12,597 pounds of food from Lewiston-Auburn letter carriers for the Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive, held Saturday, May 8. Created 18 years ago by the National Association of Letter Carriers, this event is the largest single-day food drive and provides much need nonperishable food items for food banks and food pantries across the country. Residents were asked to donate non-perishable food items by leaving them next to their mailboxes for their letter carrier to collect.
The Auburn Post Office collected 5,097 pounds food, and the Lewiston branch collected 7,500 pounds of food. This is an increase of more than 3,500 pounds over last year’s food drive!
Thank you to everyone in the community who participated! Your donations will help to provide more than 9,500 meals to those that are hungry in our community.
