Shaw’s Spirit of Giving Food Drive Supports Food-Bank

Auburn, ME  – Customers of Shaw’s Supermarkets located in Maine donated more than 13,500 pounds of food to Good Shepherd Food-Bank during Shaw’s Supermarkets  10th Annual Spirit of Giving Food Drive. In addition to supporting Good Shepherd Food-Bank, this program benefited seven other New England food banks.

From December 1 through December 24, 2009 in more than 200 stores throughout New England, the Massachusetts based company offered its customers the opportunity to purchase $5, $10 or $15 “virtual grocery bags” filled with food banks most needed food items.

"This year Shaw’s customers helped to provide more than 10,500 meals to those that are hungry in communities throughout Maine,” said Richard Small, executive director of the Food-Bank. “This donation comes just days after the Hunger Study 2010 reports that the Food-Bank is feeding more than 36,000 people a week. This is more than double what we had previously estimated. We thank Shaw’s for its commitment to giving back to the communities they serve, and we thank Shaw’s customers for their support.”

“Shaw’s Supermarkets is happy to make this delivery of product donated by our customers as part of the recent 10th Annual Spirit of Giving Food Drive,” said Rick Tremblay, Shaw’s Community Relations Manager. “We thank them for their continued support of our hunger relief efforts in Maine, and throughout New England.”

Good Shepherd Food-Bank serves more than 36,000 individuals each week in Maine through a network of more than 600 partner agencies.
