L.L.Bean Provides Grant to Food-Bank

Grant to support the installation of new Inbound Processing System

Auburn, ME – Good Shepherd Food-Bank recently received a $30,000 grant from L.L.Bean to support the installation of a state-of-the-art Inbound Processing System at the Food-Bank’s main warehouse facility in Auburn.

The new mechanized Inbound Processing System will replace the Food-Bank’s current fully manual system with equipment and technologies designed to more safely and efficiently inspect, sort and store food acquired for distribution to needy Maine families and individuals.

In 2009, the Food-Bank distributed more than 12 million pounds of food, a 20% increase over the amount distributed in 2008. The mechanized Inbound Processing System will allow the Food-Bank to be prepared operationally to keep pace with the growing demand for food throughout the state which is anticipated to reach over 15 million pounds of food by 2012.

“We are grateful for L.L.Bean’s support of the new Inbound Processing System,” said Rick Small, executive director of the Food-Bank. “This system will allow us to work faster, more efficiently, safer, and most importantly, feed more of our neighbors who are hungry.”

Good Shepherd Food-Bank provides over one million meals a month to families and individuals in Maine through a network of more than 600 partner agencies. Partner agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after school programs, day care centers, senior centers, and youth programs.
