AUBURN, Maine - GSFB receives over 62,000 hours of volunteer service each year, with most of those hours helping in some capacity to provide 70,000 individuals with food each month.
This fall GSFB was at the receiving end of the volunteer work. On September 14, seven KeyBank employees helped with an office 'facelift' as part of KeyBank's annual "Neighbors Make the Difference Day." KeyBank employees volunteered their time painting the stairwells and shampooing the carpet in a large banquet room at GSFB. "Volunteers are our greatest donors. We are grateful to businesses such as KeyBank who give back to the community, " says JoAn Chartier, public relations/education coordinator. "We simply could not do the work we do without volunteers. They are priceless to us - giving of their service, their time and their lives day after day." GSFB volunteers come from all walks of life and share one thing in common, the willingness to help their neighbors in need.
The volunteers are working professionals, retirees, stay-at-home parents, school aged children, college students, scouts and even members of the U.S. military. These dedicated individuals help with product recovery, work in the warehouse, provide administrative support and assist with maintenance projects and special events. The volunteer workforce is effectively managed with job assignments that are appropriate for the individuals or groups involved. Corporate volunteers often design unique team-building projects while school groups learn about hunger issues in their community while volunteering. Volunteers do not need to pre-commit to a particular day or shift but may come in on an available basis.
