Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger Throughout Maine

Donation will provide thousands of meals for persons in need

Hannaford Helps Fight HungerAuburn, Maine – Hannaford Supermarkets delivered nearly 1,500 cases of cereal, soup and pasta to Good Shepherd Food-Bank today as part of a “buy one, give one” promotion during the 2009 Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger campaign. In addition to the donation of food items, Hannaford representatives presented the Food-Bank with $33,000 in Hannaford gift cards that were donated by customers and associates throughout the campaign.

During the month of December, Hannaford offered its customers and associates an opportunity to participate in Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger by donating $5 to their regional food bank and by purchasing $10 Fund a Feast boxes of pre-packaged food staples. In addition, select items were part of the “buy one, give one” promotion that encouraged shoppers to purchase specially marked Hannaford brand soup, cereal and pasta items, with Hannaford then donating the same number of items to regional food banks. In total, across Hannaford’s five-state market area, Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger in 2009 provided:

  • 75,000 boxes of food staples through Fund a Feast
  • $90,000 through cash contributions made at check-out registers
  • 27,000 cans of soup, 39,000 boxes of pasta and 12,800 boxes of cereal through the “buy one, give one” promotion

“Hannaford customers again provided generous and critical support through Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger,” said Michael Norton, Hannaford spokesperson. “The ‘buy one, give one’ and Fund a Feast boxes are an effective way to reach neighbors in need with staples that are needed most.”

"A mere thank you does not express how much we value Hannaford’s support of the Food-Bank,” said Rick Small, executive director of the Food-Bank. “Hannaford has been an integral partner in helping us to achieve our mission of Feeding Maine’s Hungry for nearly 30 years. Donations like this help to provide for thousands of Mainers who make the difficult choice each day of whether to eat or pay rent or buy medicine. We sincerely appreciate Hannaford’s commitment to giving back to the communities they serve, and we thank Hannaford’s customers for their support.”
