Every Effort Counts
Dear Food-Bank Friend,
These are challenging times for many across the state. Individuals and families, including those in
the middle class, are now dealing with situations they never thought they would
have to confront.
I recently received a letter from a Belfast husband and wife struggling
to support themselves since the wife suffered a stroke a few months ago - the
majority of their income must now go to health care costs.
In spite of these challenges, this generous couple, longtime supporters
of the Food-Bank, decided they needed to continue supporting our mission to provide
for those at risk of hunger. With their
letter, they included a $1 donation.
Most of us feel helpless in the face of something as daunting as
hunger, home foreclosures, and rising health care costs. And you may feel that your dollar wouldn't
make much of a difference. You might be
saying to yourself, "How could it? It's
just too small an amount."
But with every dollar donated, the Food-Bank is able to provide four
meals for someone in need - a senior citizen who must choose between medicine
and food, a child who goes to bed hungry at night.
Every effort counts.
Sincerely,
Rick Small
Executive Director

Feed ME Food Drive a Huge Success
WCSH
6 personalities broadcasted live from four Hannaford Supermarket locations in
Brewer, Portland, Lewiston, and Sanford for the 4th Annual Feed ME food drive,
held Saturday, June 20.
Thanks to the support of generous community members, the Food-Bank
collected enough food and funds the day of the event to provide more
than 39,000 meals for the needy - and because donations were
collected at the registers at all Hannaford locations throughout the
month of June, $49,766 and 6,190 lbs of food were collected in total!
Thank you to WCSH 6, Hannaford Supermarket and those who
stopped by to make a donation for making this event a huge success!

New Program Rolls Out
Because of an exciting new partnership with Walmart, the Food-Bank is now collecting food items from 11 Walmart Superstores and will be collecting from five more soon. Since June, we've collected 15,000 pounds of food.
The potential for this partnership is incredible! Once the Food-Bank is collecting from all sixteen Superstores, we expect to collect one million pounds of food items each year that would otherwise go to waste.
Thank you to our generous partners at Walmart for this wonderful opportunity to provide for Mainers in need.

United We Serve
This summer, President Obama is challenging Americans to invest in their local communities. From now until September 11, the United We Serve initiative seeks to encourage people to make a difference by volunteering with social service organizations.
As the largest hunger relief organization in Maine, we depend on the efforts of dedicated volunteers - diverse individuals and groups from schools, churches, and civic-minded companies and organizations.
Your help is needed in the fight against hunger. Volunteer with the Food-Bank today and see how you can make a difference in the lives of 70,000 Mainers every month. For more information, click here or contact Lou Ann Bachelder at (207) 782-3554 or lbachelder@gsfb.org.
