Hannaford Delivers Results of It's Holiday Drive

Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger in Maine - Holiday 08 food drive resultsJan. 29, 2009 - Auburn ME - Hannaford Supermarkets representatives visited Good Shepherd Food-Bank today, bringing with them the fruits of their 2008 holiday food drive. The holiday program launched by Hannaford Supermarkets this winter has raised more than $1 million in community support in five states, including $264,400 worth of food and gift cards in Maine.

Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger, which ran from Nov. 2 through Jan. 24, featured direct cash donations from Hannaford, as well as in-store promotions that allowed customers to donate food and money to regional food banks and local pantries. One of those promotions let customers purchase $10 boxes filled with essentials for food banks and in turn receive a coupon book worth $50 in savings.

“We wanted to make it easier for our customers to help because the need is greater this year,” said Michael Norton, Hannaford spokesperson. “They responded by more than doubling what they’ve raised through similar programs in the past.”

In Maine, part of the proceeds from Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger resulted in the presentation Thursday of 27 pallets of food and nearly $35,000 worth of Hannaford gift cards to the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn. Good Shepherd staff members accepted the donation – which included more than 6,800 boxes of cereal and 7,116 cans of soup – from a team of Hannaford representatives.

“Hannaford has been a big part of our work to feed Maine’s hungry for more than 25 years,” said Rick Small, executive director of Good Shepherd, which last year distributed delivered 11.7 million pounds of donated and purchased food to more than 620 food pantries, soup kitchens and other organizations across Maine. “Today’s food donation, as well as a $25,000 gift we received from Hannaford in November, will help us continue to serve people during what is an especially hard winter.”

“Our message to our customers this holiday season was clear,” Norton said. “When you shop at Hannaford, you not only get a great value yourself, but you can help your community, too.”
