Food Mobile Turns Two!

Come join us on Monday, Oct 1st
10:00am at our 3121 Hotel Rd, Auburn facility

Our Food-Mobile's major sponsor, Maine's Credit Union's Campaign for Ending Hunger, along with food bank friends and partners to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary of the GSFB Food-Mobile!

Two years ago, the refurbished beverage truck, donated by Federal Distributors, turned into a mobile food pantry with the help of co-sponsor Hannaford Supermarkets. The Food Mobile has since proven to be a valuable resource in helping partner agencies and food pantries increase their distribution capacity in order to supply sufficient amounts of food to the people in need.

Visit www.GSFB.org to learn how your company can sponsor a food mobile delivery to your own community!

Agency Spotlight - Aroostook County

In the heart of the St. John Valley lies the town of Madawaska, the most French-speaking area of the country. With an exceedingly hardworking and dedicated labor force, Madawaska is also the industrial center of the St. John Valley and home of Fraser Paper, where a majority of the population works.

So, what happens in Northern Maine
when the major employer downsizes?

A ripple effect is sent through the whole community. In Aroostook County specifically, 8 people will be affected for each person who is laid-off. That's twice the national average.

What can the Good Shepherd Food Bank and it's partners do for a community 351 miles away? Well, we load up a truck with 6,556 lbs of product and we drive... 6 hours!

At 6am on Wednesday, August 22 we began distributing cereal, canned vegetables, soup, beans, laundry detergent and other supplies to 72 households. We didn't stop until noon when all the families were served.

Each year, Good Shepherd Food-Bank makes multiple Food Mobile and other special distributions in every county throughout the state. The transportation costs are significant but the benefit to the local communities are well worth it!

Thanks to the combined generosity of our many partners, Good Shepherd Food-Bank will continue to be ready to respond to crisis situations as they arise.

Partnership Matters

Mainely Tubs raises funds for Good Shepherd Food-BankMainely Tubs' recent sales promotion offered their customers matched dollars off on tubs and supplies for each donation made to Good Shepherd Food-Bank.  Dedicated staff members and generous customers helped make the fundraiser amazingly successful!   A total of $5,487 was raised for GSFB, exceeding last year's total, and becoming the food bank's largest single-location fundraiser in Maine!

This donation will equate to nearly $70,000 in retail value of food & will certainly make a difference to the children, families, and elderly we serve!

Our deepest appreciation goes to these valued partners!

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield raises funds for Good Shepherd Food-Bank

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield goes Beyond Being a Health Care Company in responding to last spring's Patriot's Day storm which left many people without power, resulting in the loss of personal food supplies.

In keeping with their commitment to improving the health and lives of Maine people, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine recently made a generous gift of $2,500 to Good Shepherd Food-Bank to replenish shelves in Southern Maine areas. Member food pantries in the area were taxed during this time as more families and people were in need of help.

Good Shepherd Food-Bank sent truckloads of food and supplies and also provided food to shelters that housed Army National Guardsmen and rescue workers. Thanks to Anthem BCBS gift,
we can provide a week's supply of  food to 137 families!

Acadia Insurance raises funds for Good Shepherd Food BankAcadia Insurance recently
made a generous donation of $3,000 to Good Shepherd Food-Bank through funds provided by the Charitable Foundation of parent corporation W. R. Berkley.

Each year, the company's Charitable Contribution Committee, made up of representatives from each of Acadia's six branches, allocates funds to be distributed to local non-profit organizations. Their 2007 goal was to choose organizations that provide a variety of services to the extended community.

Good Shepherd Food-Bank was highly recommended and chosen because of our diverse reach in communities throughout all of Maine. We are extremely grateful for the partnership of Acadia Insurance in meeting such a critical need!
Combined with the efficiencies of food banking, these funds will go a long way for the needy in Maine's communities.
