School is out for Maine Kids!

Help to relieve hunger for children this summer.

Summer is time of fun in the sun for most of us here in Maine, but unfortunately, many of our neighbors are struggling just to make ends meet. Instead, they worry about how they are going to feed their kids through the summer months when they don't get lunch at school.

GSFB and partners are doing everything we can
to meet the incredible summer demands!

In Maine this year, approximately 69,000 children were eligible for subsidized or free breakfast and lunch each day. But when school is out, many of these children, with their parents, will be in lines at food pantries, soup kitchens, and summer feeding programs in order to secure food that will help them get by each day.

The summer months can be such a hardship to families in need. A low income family with three children who qualify to eat free breakfast and lunch at school suddenly has to come up with 30 additional meals each week. Together, we can really make a difference for these families.

Spring Event Results:

WCSH 6 / WLBZ 2 and Hannaford's FEED ME food and fund drive.

On June 2, NEWS CENTER personalities and several Hannaford stores throughout Maine held their 2nd annual statewide Feed ME food and fund drive to benefit Good Shepherd Food-Bank.
The results are in!

5,107 lbs of non-perishable food were collected at the event! Even more exciting, funds totaling $31,254.61 were received which will enable Good Shepherd Food-Bank to distribute over 195,000 additional pounds of food and supplies to meet the needs of local communities across the state.

This is indeed good news for our Maine neighbors in need!

On behalf of all of the other dedicated partners in this critical mission and the people they serve, our deepest thanks go out to the folks at Hannaford Supermarkets, WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2 for making this all possible.

Thank you to all who gave so generously!

United States Postal Service - Stamp Out Hunger 2007:

On Saturday, May 12, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) participated in the annual "Stamp out Hunger" food drive. Lewiston-Auburn and surrounding areas collected an impressive 10,500 pounds of food to benefit Good Shepherd Food-Bank member agencies.

Throughout the United States, more than 70.7 million pounds of food was donated in the nation's largest one-day effort to combat hunger. The food drive consisted of more than 10,000 cities and towns across America in support of local food banks, pantries and shelters to help needy families.

4th Annual Motorcycle Ride Against Hunger

On Saturday, June 2nd, a generous donation of nearly $2,000 was given to Good Shepherd Food-Bank by various chapter members of the Christian Motorcycle Association and participants of this year's 4th Annual Ride Against Hunger.

In celebration of National Hunger Awareness Week, nearly 30 bikers gathered at L-A Harley Davidson on Main Street in Lewiston for registrations and mystery ride routes, with riders ending at Good Shepherd Food-Bank's Auburn facility for refreshments, tours, and door prize drawings.

Good Shepherd Food-Bank would like to extend special thanks to the generous friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers who sponsored the bikers and to the many businesses who donated prizes for the drawings. This added lots of fun to the festivities!

Supporting Our Agencies

Good Shepherd Food-Bank gives MORE than food.
Freezers will help communities in a big way!

Good Shepherd Food-Bank gives MORE than food. Freezers will help communities in a big way! June 13, 2007 - In observance of National Hunger Awareness Day, and for the first time in 25 years, Good Shepherd Food-Bank recently gave away 48 brand new freezers to member food pantries throughout the State of Maine, at events in Auburn and in Brewer.

The freezers have the capacity to hold 600 pounds of food and the pantries were given 2 free cases of frozen, boneless, haddock as a bonus from the Food-Bank. The food bank currently has an ample supply of boneless chicken and haddock at a shared-maintenance fee of only 16 cents per pound. Having these freezers will mean that more food pantries in Maine will help get good, nutritious meats and proteins onto the tables of struggling families in their communities.

Maine Credit Unions "Share the Bread" with Agencies in all 16 Counties

On Tuesday, June 5, the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger celebrated National Hunger Awareness Day by presenting $17,000, one of the largest, single-day contributions to multiple hunger organizations ever in Maine, to 33 hunger organizations throughout the state. The third annual 'Share the Bread' event was created by Maine's credit unions to recognize the efforts of food pantries across the State and to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in Maine.

In the morning, representatives from two food pantries in each of Maine's eight southern-most counties received a loaf of bread and a check for $500 (the other kind of bread) from the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger in a ceremony at the Maine CU League in Westbrook. The bread then traveled north, for an afternoon presentation at Good Shepherd Food Bank's Distribution Center in Brewer, where representatives from Maine's eight northern-most counties received bread and checks. The total amount highlighted the completion of the 17th year that Maine's credit unions have worked to end hunger in Maine.

Jon Paradise of the Maine Credit Union League (pictured right), said that 'Share the Bread' illustrates Maine's credit unions' philosophy about 'people helping people.'
