Moving Food to Feed Maine's Hungry
Good Shepherd Food Bank's Mobile Pantry Program (Food Mobile) allows us to expand our outreach to Maine's neediest and most underserved families. Designed to be a barrier-free distribution, our mobile pantries visit communities whose demand for emergency and supplemental food has outgrown the capacity of local food pantries. Sadly, during these difficult times, that description covers almost every city and town in our network.
To help address these expanding service gaps, our mobile pantries hit the road 120 times in 2012, covering every county in the state and delivering an unprecedented 670,000 pounds of food.
The Food Bank has two mobile pantry vehicles (made possible through the generosity of Federal Distributors, the Maine Credit Union League, and the Kraft Foundation), that are specially designed to deliver a mix of frozen, refrigerated, and dry grocery goods great distances at safe temperatures. They allow us to set up temporary pantries anywhere in the state, and distribute food straight from the trucks to the hands of those suffering the effects of food insecurity. Items typically given out include meat, dairy, breads, fresh produce, canned fruits and vegetables, pastas and sauces, canned soups and stews, and a variety of snacks.
