Moving Food to Feed Maine's Hungry
In October of 2005, we launched Maine's first ever "Food-Mobile"... a reconditioned beverage truck, donated by Federal Distributors of Lewiston, turned into a mobile food pantry! An initial grant of $15,000 from the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger helped implement the program, funding at least two deliveries to each of Maine's 16 counties.
- Maine has many remote and underserved areas.
- Many pantries have limited warehouse facilities.
- The Food-Mobile will increase the distribution capacity of our agencies.
- Enables us to distribute thousands of pounds of food throughout Maine
- Gives us the means to quickly move produce and other short shelf-life products out to needy individuals.
The Food Mobile has already become a valuable tool in helping our agencies assist more people in need.
- As of May 2006, the Food Mobile program has delivered more than 200,000 pounds of food to more than 40 pantries serving hungry people statewide
The average cost for Good Shepherd Food-Bank to make a 7,000 pound distribution of food is $800.
We are looking for sponsorships from groups, clubs, and businesses to help us continue to reach underserved communities throughout Maine.
